Day Five (Library): Learning About the Jazz Ensemble

Spider-Man: Jazz Version

Listen to Putumayo Kids Presents: Jazz Playground doing their own version of Spider-Man (starting at 2:40):

Discussion about the Homework

How are jazz band members like members of a society who work together?
How did jazz musicians show grit and cooperation?

Important Times in Jazz History

Your teacher will divide you into groups, and each group will have a different period in jazz history to read about and discuss, which is adapted from the PBS Kids website.

When you and your group members are finished reading about your time period, fill out the answers to the questions at the bottom of your sheet. Be prepared to share your answers with the class!

The Four Main Parts of the Jazz Ensemble

A jazz ensemble is a lot like a sports team or an orchestra. Each person has a role, and the members work together to create something amazing.

There are four main roles in a jazz group that we will be talking about. Can you guess what they are?
1. Melody: The main tune in a song or piece of music. The notes work together to create a pleasing, memorable sound.
2. Accompaniment: Music played along with a melody to add to it or enrich it. It often highlights the rhythm of the music.
3. Rhythm: A pattern of beats that creates a steady structure for the song. It is often in the accompaniment part of the ensemble.
4. Bass: Sometimes played on an actual string bass, the bass part usually adds to the rhythmic structure of the music.

Ticket out the door: Putting Together a Jazz Ensemble

Rejoin your timeline group so that your teacher can pass out the four roles of the ensemble, typed on slips of paper. Your teacher will also pass out pictures of the four instruments found in the Spider-Man video from earlier in the lesson. Your task is:

To listen to the Spider-Man video again and match up the role of the jazz group with the correct instruments. Be prepared to explain why you put those instruments with those roles!

*Hint*:
Not all of the roles need to be used. Sometimes there are multiple instruments doing one role!

Remember the four roles: melody, accompaniment, rhythm, and bass.

And match them up with the following instruments:
